High-Frequency Snacks at 30,000 Feet
Hello, World!
I recently went to surprise my sister and her fiancé with a surprise engagement celebration in Aspen. That meant an 8-hour travel day for us. At this point, I refuse to eat most airport food—it’s typically overpriced, processed, and low vibrational. Instead, I packed delicious foods for our trip. After years of doing this, I’ve learned what works and what doesn’t.
Here’s what I packed for our recent journey to Colorado. Most of the brands and products I love that promote a spiritual and holistic high vibe can be found in my Pantry section. Below is a combination of what I brought for both the trip there and back. You can see these delicious foods in action on the plane in my Instagram video!
What I packed:
- Bone Broth Organic Farro with goat feta and toasty seeds (recipe below)
- Sourdough Pretzels, Grass-fed Cheddar, and Lemon Arugula Bites (recipe below)
- Apples & Travel Pack Peanut Butter - pair your fruits with protein to help curb blood sugar spikes.
- Strawberries (paired with cheese or beef stick)
- Arugula
- 1 Whole Lemon
- Sourdough Sandwich: local Swiss cheese, uncured ham, spicy mustard, local honey, and arugula.
- Reusable Water Bottle
Recipes:
Bone Broth Farro with Feta and Seeds
Bone broth farro with raw sheep feta, toasted pumpkin and sunflower seeds, salt and pepper, and lots of Tabasco. And of course, a handful of arugula.
To prepare, cook 1 cup of farro according to the package instructions, replacing the water with bone broth to maximize the nutrients. Once done, drain any excess liquid and place the strainer in the fridge to cool.
Separately, heat extra virgin olive oil in a pan, add a small handful of pumpkin and sunflower seeds with salt, and stir until toasty. After that, let them cool.
Once everything has cooled, add the farro to a container, top it with feta, the toasted seeds, salt and pepper, and Tabasco. For the plane, put a big handful of arugula in a separate baggie to prevent wilting when added to the farro. This way, a nice fresh assembly can be enjoyed on the plane!
Sourdough Pretzel, Grass-fed Cheddar, and Lemon Arugula Bites
We cut the lemon on the plane and drizzled its juice over our arugula after takeoff, sliced our block of cheese, and created these delicious little snacks—so good! The fresh arugula paired perfectly with the salty, crunchy pretzel, while the creamy, flavorful cheese and the tangy lemon added the element of sour to balance out the bite.
Confidently rocking a face mask on the plane <3
FAQ:
Can you bring full meals on airplanes?
Yes! Obviously you can’t bring large containers of liquid-y foods but there are so many other options.
Do you get stopped at security?
Sometimes, but it’s usually just for a quick inspection. The food doesn’t get taken away. The key is to keep everything in clear ziplock bags or containers.
How do you pack the food?
I use disposable leftover takeout containers that we can toss on the plane, or I bring my girls’ lunch bento boxes, which I wash and refill at my destination.
How do you fill the water bottle?
Most airports now feature filtered water bottle filling stations, making hydration much cheaper and more convenient. Due to their rising popularity, you might encounter a line to refill your water, but it’s definitely worth it!
